Hot Cross Buns and Chocolate are the two best foods to come out at Easter and here we combine them in a delicious, simple cocktail! Garnish with some toasted hot cross bun for the ultimate chocolatey Easter Cocktail! This is a pushy recipe Dear Reader.
This month I was hired by Baileys Irish Cream and Smirnoff Vodka to create an Easter cocktail recipe for them to pitch out to media but once I tried it, it was so delicious that I knew I had to share it here on the blog too even though I wasn't expected to. Testing this took a lot of versions and we had so much fun making and mixing this up! It is the perfect combination of the spices from Hot Cross Buns and rich chocolate. I will be making a lot of this over our Easter break.
Tips For Making This Hot Cross Bun Cocktail
1 - Chocolate and vanilla ice cream works very well in this cocktail. If you love chocolate, make it with chocolate ice cream but if you want to bring out the spices a bit more use vanilla ice cream (I love it with vanilla ice cream but Mr NQN loves it with chocolate haha!).
2 - The cold foam is best made in a milk frother on cold froth setting (not hot!). Ensure that you start with very cold milk and cream. You can also replace the cold foam with whipped cream if that is easier. I always have a squirty can of whipped cream in the fridge for emergency situations like this. Just smooth it over with an angled spatula so that you can do the hot cross bun detail.
3 - With cold foam, it is best to make this one batch at a time to ensure that it froths up to a thick texture. If the foam is not thick enough it will not sit on top of the cocktail and will meld into the cocktail!
4 - I don't add the ice cream into the cocktail shaker in one scoop, I cut it into pieces so that it is easier to shake up and dissolve. The ice cubes help to break it up.
5 - To make the cross effect you can use chopsticks or just strips of cardboard or paper on top of the cocktail. Then sieve over some hot chocolate powder or cocoa powder and it's done!

60g/2oz ice cream (chocolate or vanilla works well)
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Ice Cubes
60ml.1flozs milk, very cold
90g/3ozs pure or thickened cream, very cold
1/2 teaspoon hot chocolate powder
Thick cold foam
Step 1 - First make the cold foam. Add the milk and cream into a frother and cold froth until thick (around 2 minutes). It should be very thick and able to hold its shape.
Adding in the ice cream in pieces rather than a big scoop
Step 2 - While the foam is being made, place the Baileys Irish Cream, vodka, ice cream, cinnamon and nutmeg into a cocktail shaker. Add half a dozen ice cubes and shake well so that the ice cream dissolves. Strain ice cubes and pour into a martini glass.
Step 3 - Place two chopsticks in a hatch pattern over the cold foam and sieve hot chocolate powder on top. Remove chopsticks carefully and serve.
Ever since I made this recipe I've been making it a couple of nights every week and whenever I offer some to Mr NQN he jumps at it. So much so that it's becoming my current signature drink. I was thinking back to people having a drinks that they're known for. We were at an Elliott family picnic. Everyone in the Elliott family has a role and brings the same dish. I always bring dessert and some sort of savoury but the preponderance is dessert because I always have 2-3 cakes in the freezer that I save up for such an occasion. Mr NQN's sister Amaya and husband Laporello always bring this vegan pasta salad while Araluen always brings a tomato, cucumber and bocconcini salad. Mr NQN's mother Tuulikki always brings hummus and Lebanese bread and Mr NQN's brother Manu always brings fruit. And someone else sometimes bring hummus so that we never encounter a hummus shortage.
And today I learnt that everyone has their own coffee order too. Manu introduced us to his new girlfriend Manuela. The two met while canyoning. She's originally from Czechoslovakia and used to be a barista and she and Manu kindly offered to get everyone's coffee. They soon regretted it as a flurry of slightly complicated coffee orders spilled forth. Mine is a decaf iced skim latte, Araluen's was a weak soy iced decaf coffee. And Manu's coffee is a skim flat white while Manuela's is a flat white almond and Tuuikki (Mr NQN's mum) has a soy latte. And the simplest of all is Mr NQN who just wants a flat white!
So tell me Dear Reader, what is your coffee order and is it complicated? Do you have a drink that you're known for?
