Queen's Pastri House is a cafe and bakery in Ramsgate. There are a range of unique pastries, cakes and creations and this month they have a rather special croissant. Find out what that flavour is and what it is like (and whether it is worth a trip!).
I first heard about the new croissant flavour on Instagram from a fellow influencer Annie's Bucketlist. She moment she flashes a pink Iced Vovo flavoured croissant on the screen I was intrigued and scrambling to look at google maps to see how far away Queen's Pastri House was and make quick plans to visit. A couple of days later I visit Queens Pastri House with Mr NQN, Teddy and Milo in tow.
The bakery cafe is located on a corner block with a large, covered outdoor section so it is perfect to take your dogs. If coming on a weekend you are best to arrive early because by noon most of the savoury items are gone. And I do recommend coming on the weekend because that is when the special croissant flavours are available. We order some things to eat and take a seat outside. Mr NQN gives the coffee a thumbs up and we try the food.
We both really enjoy the layered chorizo and tomato tart. There's a layer of spinach, cheese and sliced chorizo on a tomato pastry base. They also heat this up for us which makes it even better in this chilly summer day.
The bocconcini tomato twist is another laminated pastry presented as a plait or a twist with tomato jam, pesto, halved cherry tomatoes and sliced bocconcini on top with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar glaze. The sweet tomato jam and pesto balance the crisp, buttery pastry and this along with the Danish are my favourite savoury items.
We also try the quiche Lorraine or the bacon quiche. It's nice with a good pastry base but I am super fussy with my namesake Quiche Lorraine's and I prefer my version where the egg is baked at a lower temperature so that it is softer. But that's just me!
I coudln't tell from the display how large the focaccia was and it is a larger slab than I thought it would be which accounts for its price. It's topped with olives and tomatoes and comes with a little pot of olive oil to dip it in. It's nice although it's probably best eaten at home where you can reheat it in the oven.
Onto the cakes! While there are large party sized cakes, we go for some of the smaller, individual sized cakes. The Lemon Berry Bliss has a soft sponge, stewed strawberries and cream. It's lovely and light and the whole thing is rolled in pink pistachio chocolate with chocolate at each end.
We also try the Ramsgate Beach on a staff recommendation with a coconut cake base, mousse filling and topped with mango and passion fruit. While we liked the cakes, I prefer the pastries as they are really well done with a strong butter flavour and aroma.
I am very excited to try the Iced Vovo Croissant. It's one of my favourite Australian biscuits or cookies and I love the combination of raspberry and coconut. The croissant is filled with creme patissierie and raspberry jam and on top there's a thick stripe of raspberry jam down the centre, pink icing and coconut as well as an Iced Vovo biscuit on top. I take a bite. It's incredible and the perfect ratio of cream, jam and light and buttery croissant. I take another bite and then another and before you know it, my half is gone and I'm hoping that Mr NQN doesn't want his half (he did). The only thing is that the specialty croissants change every month and are only available on weekends!
So tell me Dear Reader, do you like trying one off food specials or do you go for the same selection that you know and like?
