Looking for a beautiful hotel in Bangkok? Try The Athenee Hotel, a luxurious Bangkok hotel with royal connections. The hotel has an extravagant lobby area while rooms speak of quiet luxury. Come along and take a room tour!
The Athenee Hotel is my home for this one night in Bangkok. Located in the centre of Bangkok Sukhumvit it is also just metres away from the Phloenchit BTS skytrain station. The elegant hotel is part of Marriott's Luxury Collection of hotels and has been open since 2017. The hotel sits on the grounds of Princess Valaya Alongkorn's former palace. She was the daughter of Chulalongkorn, King Rama V (1853 – 1938) and the aunt of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX.
Every afternoon The Athenee hotel has “Mieng Dok Bua” which is their epicurean experience between 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. at The Glaz Bar. This is where you can try some traditional Thai snacks and learn the art of folding lotus leaves. There are also daily tours where you can learn more about the history of the hotel. To eat, there are six eateries and restaurants at The Athenee but considering I'm vanquished from the flight, all I want to see is the inside of my room.
There's a grand dual staircase, sparkling chandeliers and the lobby is decked out in tones of white, cream and black. Service is deferential and when I check in the check in staff show me up to my room in a gesture I haven't seen for some time.
There are 374 guest rooms and suites and I'm in one of the king rooms. My room #903 although an entry level room, make good use of the space. There's a comfortable king bed, a large chaise alongside the window that looks out towards the city and turndown is already performed with slippers are already laid out for me to slide into at the side of the bed. The black and white colour scheme is echoed in the main bedroom. There's a 48in/122cm LED TV but and a bluetooth speaker through the phone. In total the room spans 38sqm or 409sqft. The plugs are all international plugs so you don't need an adaptor.
The marble floor bathroom has a single sink with a comprehensive amenity kit in doubles. The only thing missing is a make up mirror. There's a separate bath and shower and I sink into a fluffy robe and towel and wash away the flight using heavenly scented amenities by Byredo Le Chemin, a delicious citrus blend.
The baggage is brought up swiftly while they are showing me the room. As I'm still tired from the flight I order some room service. I go for something simple and healthy.
The spicy pomelo salad is paired with roasted coconut, shrimp and shredded chicken. It's a lot of pomelo with a small amount of coconut, shrimp and chicken with a resounding amount of chilli spice to awaken my senses.
The wok fried mixed vegetables with soy sauce are simple and tasty. And for dessert, I help myself to the fruit plate, macarons and chocolate before falling asleep and trying to sleep off the flight!
So tell me Dear Reader, when you arrive in a city do you try and go out for dinner or do you just order room service?
NQN stayed at The Athenee as a guest of the Tourism Authority of Thailand but the room service was independently paid for and all opinions remain her own.
