Bowl'd Out, Bronte

The competition is thick on this stretch of Macpherson Street. Bowl'd Out is a vegetarian cafe with a focus on healthy food. 70% of their ingredients are organic and there's plenty of choice for dairy free and vegan eaters.

Bowl'd Out, Bronte

Two years ago Yvanna Napoli and Nos Gee had a Bare Naked Bowls franchise located here but recently decided to leave the franchise and start their own thing. They reduced the 16 smoothie bowl menu down to 6 and added salad bowls, toasts and other specials that rotate every 3 months.

Almost everything is made in-house from the peanut butter drizzle to the almond milk used in the drinks which is made every second day. Service is super friendly and lovely. The coffee which is by St Dreux is also excellent as is the chai latte.

Berry Nice and Tropical Storm $12.50 each (back)

All of the drinks are enormous at 750ml each. The Berry Nice smoothie has almond mylk, banana, blueberry, natural peanut butter, vanilla protein and is a mix of richness from the peanut butter and blueberries. The Tropical Storm is made with coconut water, pineapple, mango, passionfruit, lime juice, mint and is a frosty slushie with a bit of tartness to it. I also like one of the specials, a watermelon and mint slushie which is very refreshing especially with the little bits of fresh mint as well as pineapple and lime.

Summer Yoghurt Bowl $12

Starting with the bowls, I love the summer yoghurt bowl and really I'm not a big yogurt breakfast person. The base has natural yoghurt, chia pudding and mango giving it a fruity sweetness. On top are delicious caramelised buckini (sweet buckwheat kernels), slices of banana, kiwifruit, shredded coconut, strawberries and honey. I particularly like the crunch and sweetness from the buckini.

Bowl'd Out $17

The acai bowls are made to order (rather than coming out of a slurpee machine or a premix). The most popular is the Bowl'd Out bowl with a base of acai, coconut water and banana topped with cacao buckini, fresh strawberries, banana slices, shredded coconut, blueberries, hemp seeds and a rich peanut butter drizzle. The peanut butter drizzle is so moreish and I am told anything with their house-made peanut butter drizzle is an instant best seller.

Pitaya Bowl dairy free $16.50

My favourite bowl is the pitaya bowl with pittaya or dragonfruit, mango, banana, coconut milk in the base. This is topped with toasted granola, strawberries, blueberries, shredded coconut, chia seeds and honey.

Coco'd Out (DF) (V) $16.50

We also try the Coco's Out bowl with a base of acai, coco mylk, mango and banana. It is topped with coconut yoghurt, strawberry, shredded coconut, banana, chia seeds, passion fruit, kiwifruit and is sweetened with honey (the one above had honey added later).

Breakie Roll $13

Now we're getting more on my turf (team savoury breakfast!). The breakfast roll is filled with a fried egg, cheese (can be vegan cheese), baby spinach, avocado, vegan mayo and tomato relish. The egg yolk bursts with the first bite and it's damn tasty.

Smashed Avocado on Wholewheat $12

However hands down my favourite item is the smashed avocado toast. There are three types of avo toast on the menu and I tried the one with feta and a delicious herby chermoula sauce made with mint, parsley and coriander with apple cider vinegar and extra virgin olive oil on whole grain bread. And a big shout out to well priced avo toast too.

Halloumi Bowl $16.50 + Egg, Felafel and Rice Ball $3 each

While the Spice Bowl is the best selling bowl, I am more drawn to the halloumi bowl because well...halloumi! It has a generous amount of pan fried halloumi, mixed leaf salad, buckwheat, cucumber and tomato but I also add eggs, felafel and rice balls for a more substantial salad. It normally comes with a lemon and olive oil dressing but I definitely recommend adding the avocado dressing to it. It adds a wonderful creaminess to the salad.

And all that healthy food leaves room for cake for dessert ;)

So tell me Dear Reader, are you team savoury or sweet breakfast? Would you choose a smoothie bowl or avocado toast?
