Popular burger chain Down N Out is now Plan B Works and they serve up delicious burgers, fries and other American favourites like Philly Cheesesteaks and Reubens!
You may have first heard of this burger chain when they were Down N Out burgers. Earlier this year a Federal Court ruled that hashtag burgers (the people behind Down N Out) had infringed the American chain In N Out's name.
Plan B has locations in Ryde, Castle Hill and Crows Nest and Sammie and I are at the Crows Nest location. There's a small outdoor area and they clean off the tables and chairs before we sit down. Ordering is done at the counter and there's a menu of burgers, sides and American favourites, the latter served on a bed of fries. There's also a Nashville chicken burger special as well that looks delicious but there's only so much stomach room (did I really say that?).
It had been 8 weeks since I last ate a burger before this visit. In that time I've made a lot of food but never a burger and I had missed them dearly. It takes us a while to decide what to order because we were too busy cooing over the dogs. The two Teddys haven't seen each other for a while and the two puppies are only a few months apart in age. I take our number to the table and they bring our food out.
I find it hard to resist a fried chicken burger as fried chicken is one of my favourite foods. The Bucking Buffalo is a beauty with an enormous Southern Fried chicken breast fillet spilling out of the bun. Inside there's also buffalo sauce, blue cheese sauce, hash brown, American cheese and shredded lettuce. I only meant to take a few bites but before I know it, I've finished my half completely.
I also really enjoy the chilli cheeseburger with a wagyu beef patty, double American cheese, beer battered onion rings, jalapenos, house peri peri sauce and Plan B sauce. In fact it's hard to decide which I like better as they're both really good.
There are items like a New York Reuben sandwich or hot dogs but they suggested the Philly cheesesteak so I give that a go. It's a soft hot dog bun filled with ground wagyu mince, Provolone cheese, grilled onions and Anita cheese sauce on a bed of cheese drizzled fries. It's not bad, quite good although I do prefer the two burgers to this because this ends up quite bready whereas the ratio of the bun to filling in the burgers is better.
Well you know me and sauces. Even Sammie says, "I know you love a sauce situation," and she's right. I ordered four sauces to go with the fries under the Philly Cheese Steak. I try two hot sauces (gravy and cheese) and two cold (blue cheese and peri peri sauce). The two cold sauces are my favourite; the blue cheese jas a good balance of blue cheese and creaminess while the peri peri is tangy and spicy. The cheese sauce is perhaps my least favourite while the gravy is pretty decent.
The Jalapeno poppers are filled with cream cheese and are then battered and deep fried. The cheese inside is hot and liquid when you bite into them.
Like the cheese sauce, I found the mac and cheese a bit bland but when you add some blue cheese sauce it has a lot more flavour!
The bonus? The two puppies were very well behaved!
So tell me Dear Reader, is there a food that you haven't eaten in a while that you miss? Do you have a favouite burger filling?
