Trick or Treat? Friday the 13th Halloween Cigarettes

Friday the 13th Halloween Cigarettes

It's double the trouble this month with Halloween and Friday the 13th in the one month. And what better way to celebrate Friday the 13th today than taking a break, having a glass of whisky and nibbling on these edible cigarettes. These fake candy cigarettes are ridiculously easy to make and they look just like the real thing. And bonus: they are absolutely delicious too!

Valentina sent me a link to these edible cigarettes by Passionspoon and I thought they were just about the cleverest thing ever. I was so pleased to see how easy they were. You know me, I am all about minimal effort, maximum impact. And this is perfect for Friday the 13th. It's times like this that I wished I worked in an office-imagine leaving a plate of these out for afternoon snacks or offering your colleagues a cigarette?

Tips For Making Halloween Cigarettes

1 - I used grissini brad sticks rather than pretzels as the only straight pretzels I could find were the really thin sticks. Grissini are easy to find at the supermarket. The quantity below is for 50g/1.7ozs of grissini (enough for a full ash tray look).

2 - Grissini has two sides, a darker baked side and a paler bottom side. Use the darker more baked side to simulate the colour of a cigarette filter.

3 - Break the grissini in half, thirds or quarters. It's good to have them in different sizes.

4 - Always melt white chocolate on lower heat as it burns faster than milk or dark chocolate. I place it in the microwave at 50% power for 1-2 minutes checking halfway.

5 - If you don't like the taste of coconut oil you can use another oil. The oil is to make the white chocolate a bit more liquid and easier to drape over and coat food. Alternatively you can use white chocolate melts that are designed for this (I just prefer the taste of chocolate buds).

6 - To make the flame or lit part of the cigarette use either coloured white chocolate or tinted royal icing. The red chocolate melts I bought were a pale pink colour (I think it was a bad batch) so I used some tinted royal icing I had left over from these Halloween cookies and tinted it orange/red.

7 - To make the ash, mix a couple of drops of black food colouring and 4 tablespoons of white sugar and massage together in a ziplock bag.

Friday the 13th Halloween Cigarettes

I was SO chuffed at how these turned out and can't wait to see everyone's faces this Halloween. I offered to make Mr NQN a batch to take to work but he declined (party pooper!). I used to smoke when I was a teenager and I really can't believe I used to because I am now repulsed by the smell of cigarettes. But that doesn't stop me from dreaming about smoking. I find my dreams valuable and they help me solve problems and give me clarity into vexing situations but I am honestly confused about why I used to dream about smoking.

A few years ago I dreamt about smoking a lot, at least once every fortnight. Apparently dreaming of smoking can be interpreted in many different ways. Some say that it's a sign of another addiction (eating or drinking- probably eating), while others say that dreaming of smoking means binge eating, adultery, flirtation, excess sexual activity or the misuse of authority. On the other hand I've read that it says that it means that through difficult time you will gain rewards. Or maybe it was a hint to make these edible cigarettes that are much more fun and palatable than actual cigarettes!

So tell me Dear Reader, have you ever dreamt of smoking? Do you remember your dreams? Oh and good luck this Friday the 13th!

An Original Recipe by Lorraine Elliott

Preparation time: 20 minutes

Cooking time: 2 minutes

  • 50g/1.7ozs grissini bread sticks
  • 75g/2.7ozs white chocolate
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 20g/0.7ozs Red or orange chocolate melts or royal icing
  • 4 tablespoons white sugar
  • A couple of drops of black food colouring
  • Ashtray style plate (avoid using a used ashtray as it won't be clean enough)

Step 1 - Break the breadsticks in various lengths - some I halved, some I broke into three or four pieces. Line two baking trays with parchment. Melt the chocolate in a microwave on 50% power until melted. Stir in the coconut oil and mix until smooth. Dip the grissini darker side up (grissini has a pale and a dark side but the dark side is what we want as it's the colour of cigarette filters) in the chocolate leaving a section undipped for the filter at the top. Make sure to scrape the chocolate off the bottom of the stick just on the side of the bowl. Place darker side up on the lined baking tray. Allow to set (I pop the tray in the fridge or freezer).

Step 2 - Then melt the red and orange chocolate or tint the royal icing. Place the sugar in a ziplock bag and add 2 drops of black food colouring. Massage to distribute and then place in a small bowl. Dip the tips in the orange chocolate or icing and then dip the very tip in the ash sugar. Place back on the trays and allow to set. Then place in a bowl or ashtray plate in various sizes with the ash sugar at the bottom and sprinkled on top.

Make these ahead of time and store in an airtight container between layers of parchment in the freezer for up to a month.
